In the world of professionalism, there is one word that you hear more than any other. No matter what profession you choose to work in, this one word is bound to be in your future and in many ways, may determine your future. That's right- the word I am referring to is NETWORKING! What exactly is networking anyways? By definition, networking is "a process that fosters the exchange of information and ideas among individuals or groups that share a common interest". This exchange is often for social or business purposes. Through means of mutual connections, ties and contacts, professionals are able to connect and engage in this process of networking.
The act of networking in itself is such a powerful professional tool. Unfortunately, this tool goes underutilized and often misused. Many fail to realize the true purpose and power of networking. When you consider a professional network, these are like-minded individuals in a common field, who you can essentially use as a ‘cheat sheet’. The act of networking is not just to have a list of contacts that you never use, rather genuine relationships that form over time through consistent contact. This in many ways, can save your career. Having people you can call on when you truly need them serves as a major benefit in any career. As a result of maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with people regardless of their titles, these very people will almost always be willing to help you in times of need-whatever that may be.
These individuals may also be able to serve as mentors in the field, something highly beneficial. When there are things you just do not know, it is always great to have mentors who have been in your shoes and who are more than willing to help you get to where they are. When done properly, networking in itself can serve as a job. The willingness to network and follow up with professionals shows a level of dedication and commitment to your own success. If done correctly, it also shows a level of commitment to the individual as well. Those you network with will undoubtedly recognize this drive and be all the more willing to be a resource. Surprisingly, networking is not something many people master.
It all comes down to mindset. This starts with the way you view networking. Networking in itself is an art form. I am a firm believer that sometimes it is not what you know, rather who you know. This proves to be true especially at the start of your career. When you have little to no experience, what distinguishes you from other candidates sometimes comes down to who you know and someone putting in a good word for you. Through continuous networking and relationship building, you will be surprised how many professionals are willing to take a chance on your success.
So how exactly does one go about networking anyways? It is much simpler than you may think. Networking is something you cannot put too much thought into, rather something you just do and keep doing. You must place yourself in environments where there will be ample opportunities to network. If you do not know where to start, it is always good to research professional development opportunities as it pertains to your specific profession and attend as many as possible. If there are organizations designated for your profession, JOIN! Even if there is a membership fee, it is generally collected on an annual basis so this leaves much room for flexibility. Joining professional organizations opens countless doors and will expose you to endless professionals through attendance at various events. It is even a good idea to join multiple organizations is you can. The more opportunities to surround yourself with other professionals, the better. The idea of networking for many may seem frightening or even intimidating but once you begin the process, it becomes easier and easier. Before you know it, you will be a networking pro!
